You should always book a flight ahead of time; even if its just one day before your departure. Fares on the discount airlines increase everyday as the planes fill up. If need to wait until the last minute to book a flight you will generally get better deals with national carriers like KLM as opposed to the discount airlines. Check the airline web sites for the best deals.

you probably know this already, but in case you don't let me repeat it: discount carriers are VERY picky about carry-on and checked baggage limits. If you're even the smallest amount over you face surcharges that can quickly add up. This isn't to scare anyone away from the carriers; they offer a quick and inexpensive way to get from place to place. Just be sure you know you'll meet their luggage limits.
