Fly to Venice, tour area and travel to Crotia.

Hello,

My wife and I are in the beginning stages of planning another trip to Europe this Fall. One possibility is flying to Venice, spending some time in the city and surrounding area and then traveling to Croatia. We visited Slovenia and Croatia last year and it was a wonderful trip. Many thanks to Rick's Forum travelers for all their tips. We did not get down to Split and Dubrovnik on this trip. Does it make any sense to combine these two areas? If so how much time would we need to do this. We did rent a car in Zagreb last year and the roads were perfect. I have heard all sorts of horror stories about driving in Italy. Everything is wide open including some other spots in Europe for the Fall. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding this trip.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

I'm not sure when in the Fall you are planning your trip, but transportation options slow down dramatically in October. Also, are you interested in just going to Split and Dubrovnik, or other areas as well? During September, there are inexpensive flights from Venice to Split if you book ahead, usually on Sundays and Wednesdays. See www.skyscanner.com for options.

There are also boat connections between Venice and several towns in Istria, such as Rovinj, typically Wed-Sun. through Sept. operated by Venezia Lines. See this website for schedules - www.venezialines.com/schedules.

Depending on how much time you have and what exactly you are interested in seeing, you could take a boat from Venice to Rovinj, spend a few days there, then pick up a car and head down the coast to Split for a few nights, possibly stopping at Plitvice National Park for a night on the way. You could go to the island of Hvar as a day trip from Split by boat, then drive down the coast and take a ferry to the island of Korcula for several nights, before taking the ferry back to the mainland and ending your trip in Dubrovnik. I'd spend several days here, then fly home from Dubrovnik (via another European city).
