I would appreciate advice on where to stay - Naples or Pomeii.
We are flying into Naples LATE at night (11pm), want to see Pompeii the next day, spend another night and then fly out of Naples to Sicily.
After Sicily we fly back to Naples to spend a week visiting the Amalfi Coast.
Should we stay in Naples, since we get in so late, then go out to Pompeii in the morning and return to our hotel in Naples at the end of the day or should we go directly to Pompeii that night, sleep there two nights and then head back to the Naples airport.
We plan to use a hired driver recommended by a friend and will have time to see Naples at the end of our trip.
Is there an advantage to staying in Pompeii, any special things to see early morning/evening that might make it worth the extra time when we arrive at the airport?
With arrival that late I would just stay in Naples both nights
The center is very close to the airport
Make sure your hotel has late check in
We actually land at 6:10pm - so not as late (my math wasn't mathing) but the question remains. Thanks!
I can’t think of anything that would make me stay in Pompei. But, if you are just not a city person, or if you really think you’ll have time in Naples on the second leg, or because of travel exhaustion you’ll do nothing but see Pompeii, which can indeed take all day if you are so inclined, then it is not unreasonable. I had a lackluster pizza lunch in Pompei, something I did not think was actually possible in Italy, but I have read there is a Michelin starred place in Pompei now, which would make it more of a destination to some.
I think it would probably be more efficient for your trip overall to stay in Naples the two nights.
I too would just stay in Naples. You can then take the Circumvesuviana train in the morning which drops you off steps from the main entrance. The modern town of Pompeii is sort of inconvenient for the ancient site, requiring either a long walk or a cab to get to the ruins.
That way, doing the ruins in the morning, you could hit the very good Archeological museum in Naples in the afternoon, and of course, pizza.
Thank you. That is just what I needed to hear to help me decide. Also, if the flight is delayed and we do get in REALLY late, we won't have far to go.
