If it is the flight to EWR, most would advise not less than 3 hrs.

If you are taking a flight that goes to some other Schengen country, 2 hrs usually is what is advised

We always stay at the Hilton connected to the airport. you can walk to the United counter in 10 minutes & don't have to worry about traffic..

I’m flying next Tuesday, November 9. After I get home I’ll post my airport experience here in case it will be helpful to future travelers. There are two things that I probably should have mentioned in my original post that might affect my time at the airport. One is I am flying business class. This could reduce my check in time. Two is, while I am a U.S. citizen with a U.S. passport, I also have a E.U. passport due to my mother being born in Ireland. I’m wondering if using that at FCO would get me to the gate quicker. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I am a dual italian-american citizen and flew through Rome yesterday. Arrived two hours in advance to fly to Munich from Rome. This is my third trip through Rome this year. Busier this time than in August or of course April. Lines were no problem.

I flew on United flight 41 from Rome to Newark on November 9. I got to the airport at 6:55 AM and was at the gate at 7:55 AM, a total of one hour. That might not be typical though. I flew business class so I had a shorter time to check my bag. The people who were right behind me in the original line got to the gate about ten minutes after I did. So the business class line for checking bags saved me ten minutes. The flight was originally scheduled to depart at 9:55 AM. In the middle of the night United texted that it would leave at 10:30 AM. Somewhere between 5 and 6 AM United texted that it would leave at 11:00 AM. So maybe some people got to the airport later that they normally would which would have resulted in shorter lines when I got there early.
