Hi, My husband and I will be taking our two boys (ages 2 & 5) to Italy at the end of August. I'm not sure the best area in Florence to start looking for hotels? Any suggestions? Our children are well traveled, and used to "not like home" situations and locations. Thanks!
Erin
I suggest you find a hotel or apartment with a rooftop terrrace that has views of the Duomo - your boys can look at the people who've made it to the top of the dome (ditto for the bell tower), fun at any time of day. Other than that, Florence is very child-friendly. I would stay in the centro storico near the major sites.
Keep in mind that Florence is pretty hot and humid in August, so if that will be an issue for you make sure that your lodgings have ac. We like staying in the duomo area. Tripadvisor is a good place to start, and of course the Rick Steve's Florence and Tuscany book has some great recommendations in varying price ranges.
We're fighting the same battle, trying to narrow down the choices to a single hotel, so hard when you've never been for to really tell the specifics of hotels (and every hotel, even the best in the world manages a negative review or two, and makes you start to wonder, what if!)
