Florence with a 12 year old May 31-June 4

My husband and I are traveling with our 12 year old son to Florence May 31 - June 4. I promised only one museum day/cathedral touring (Friday June 1). Any advice about any of the following would be appreciated!

  • June 2 is Italian Independence Day - anything I should know for this day other than to expect some businesses to be closed?
  • Any advice for fun stuff with a pre-teen would be great. He's not really a sports guy.
  • We will not have a car on this trip. Has anyone taken the bus to Chianti from Florence? Is a day trip to Chianti a good use of one of our days - Monday maybe?
  • We are Catholic and I thought we would attend mass Sunday at the Duomo. We will tour it separately. For fellow catholics out there, would you take your friends to the Duomo for mass or would you suggest another catholic church for the one Sunday in Florence? Thanks!

We were there last summer with our 12yo boy, also not into sports, very bright but museums, ruins, etc were not his cup of tea. We did one museum every morning (we are morning people) and then had a list of possibilities for the afternoons, and then in the evenings we would walk around the river area. We were there for less time, so had less unscheduled time to consider, but we considered going by train to Lucca and renting bikes and riding around the wall that goes around the city. Also considered training to Pisa, just for the fun of it being something the is familiar with. There is a public pool (there are actually 3 - if you google visitflorence.com, they have a list of family ideas and include descriptions of the three pools. The one we were considering is next to the river just south(?) of the train station [I think, I don't have a map in front of me]). We didn't go to the pool, but it was in our pocket if we needed it. We also strolled around Boboli gardens one afternoon. The Mercado for lunch was also fun - we walked there from/after the Academia visit...
He enjoyed the Academia, really didn't like the Uffizi, enjoyed the Dome climb and liked the rest of the features associated (although he did not come with us to the Duomo museum). We were on a 5 week trip with his two sisters, and sometimes we would leave him at the rental (apt. in our case) with a Netflix movie on the iPad. I know, the horror, but we battled for weeks making him go to all the places because I felt so strongly that it was important for him in the long run, but after a few weeks, we realized there was a balance to be struck that made life more pleasant for everyone. His older sister loved the things we did, he did not. So worst case scenario, there may be an afternoon when he could use some down time and do this.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like your son and mine would be friends:). Great idea about the pool and I will look into Lucca and an informal bike rental. And I get letting your boy have some screen time at the apartment when the rest are off 'touristing' - it seems like an appropriate privilege for a responsible and thoughtful 12 year old (which mine is too). thanks again!

You can take an easy short bus ride from Florence to Siena. Walled town that is a fun walkabout. Of course pizza would be on the menu and u could have a picnic on the grand open plaza or at one of the cafes surrounding it. Then a wonderful gelato is always a great ending.
Another interesting to do in Florence is the Ferragamo shoe museum. How luxe shoes are made and shoes of celebrities are on display.
Santa Maria Novella parfumeria is in an old convent nr bus station. Beautiful shop Old pharmacy style that sells their products. A beautiful shop to see for its renaissance fixtures and of course to purchase their famous toiletry products are optional.

Another option sice u are Catholic is visit Assisi. U would need a full day. St Francis of Assisi pilgrimage sight.

Two museums your son might enjoy are the Galileo museum and Leonardo da Vinci museum.

I took the bus to Chianti in Greve last September for the wine festival. It was an easy trip from the main bus station in Florence, but the town is small and may not be the best use of your time. You might enjoy Siena more, and there's more that would interest your son - e.g. climbing the town hall tower or possibly running across groups practicing their flag throwing routines for the Palio (listen for drums).

You might enjoy the English mass at Santi Apostoli e Biagio. It's a beautiful, intimate 12th century church that sits in a small piazza between Borgo Santi Apostoli and the Arno River. I don't recall the time for the English mass, but you could stop by and check as it's only a few minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio. You'll be glad you stopped to see the church even if you decide to attend mass at the Duomo instead.

When in Florence with the Family Tour a few years ago, the assistant guide took the kids to the huge indoor Food Market. As the alternative activity was touring the Uffizi and we'd been there several times, my husband and I opted to go along with the kids. Not only did the kids thoroughly enjoy seeing the um..."interesting", amazing and sometimes unfamiliar items for sale (pigs heads, feet, ears, snouts, etc.....) immensely, so did we. Everyone bought something to share (the recognizable and kid friendly items for the most part!) at a picnic in a nearby park. It was an unusual, fun and memorable experience; on your kids might enjoy, too.

I really don’t think Florence is kid friendly. We been there a few times, once with 4 kids. We typically stay in Lucca in a family apartment and day trip to Florence. That works well for our laid back, non-sporty tweens.
