Any suggestions for a family of four?
Hotel Casci located on Via Cavour was a really nice place.
It is a bit expensive but close to all the sights and very comfortable.
You can book by using following web sites

I decided to stay at the Hotel David www.davidhotel.it - a tad out of town but not too far. gets incredible reviews at tripadvisor and i got super lucky and got a 75 euros rate for early september.
I stayed at the Pitti Palace just at the end of the Ponte Vecchio. Really liked it and they have a great roof top terrace that overlooks the town and the Duomo.
Hotel Maxim---About as centraly located as you could be. We stayed last September for 90 eros I think.
We stayed at the Adler Cavalieri in March 2006, which was very nice.
Located close to the train station, very modern, & had a GREAT Breakfast Buffet Included.
I found it on Tripadvisor.
We enjoyed Soggiorno Battistero and were a family of four also. Boys 14 & 10. Received a quad room with a Piazza view.

We also stayed at the Hotel Casci and absolutely loved it. The hosts are very helpful, speak excellent English and really make you feel at home. Check out their website. It is very helpful.
Hi Mary --- You are going to LOVE Florence! I traveled with 3 other women and we stayed in a great little apartment, the Alberti, on Borgo San Lorenzo, just a block from the Duomo. One bedroom w/queen bed(with a secret upstairs room) and a loft with two twin beds. Check out the website sleepinginflorence.com, Gianna has a few properties located through the city, but we found the Alberti to be in a super location. As we continued our travels through Rome and the Cinque Terre, we all missed our little spot in Florence! I would definitely stay there again.
I can't say enough great things about the Hotel Casci. The first time we went to Florence -- 8 years ago -- I FAXED them for a reservation (email wasn't as common), and mentioned in one sentence that we were celebrating a belated anniversary. We made that reservation 4 1/2 months before our trip -- way toooo early. However, when we checked in, we were directed to our room. In there was a small bottle of Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) and a lovely card wishing us Happy Anniversary.
The staff was FANTASTIC, and full of great information and recommendations.
To be candid my husband and I booked on Orbitz for many of our hotels on our trip three years ago. (I know, a big RS no-no.) We stayed at the Hotel Baglioni in Florence and really loved it. It was just across from the train station and it fit within our 100 Euro a night budget at the time. Lots of dark beams and a breakfast room overlooking the famous duomo dome. Not rustic but definitely comfortable. Florence is a challenge so comfort is often appreciated. Have a great trip!
Husband, daughter and her hubby, and I stayed at the Hotel Silla in Florence last year and loved it.
Old, full of charm, very clean, very friendly staff, great breakfasts, walking distance of Pitti Palace, lots of little shops, the bridge, etc.
we loved the Hotel Pendini--graet location see if you can get a room on the piazza--a little more noise but lovely
