Russell, that's about one kilometer, or about 5/8 of a mile, so if you are in decent shape it's a piece of cake. Note that some sidewalks and a lot of streets will be cobbled, but you're not in a hurry, right? Enjoy the walk!
Russell,
That's quite a distance to walk with luggage (unless you're extremely energetic), so I'd suggest taking a Taxi from the station (especially if the weather is hot).
Unless your luggage consists of only a carry-on size suitcase (preferably on wheels), you should take a taxi. It is a 20 min walk which includes going down and up the Piazza Stazione pedestrian underpass (a sort of underground small mall) and walking on narrow cobbled sidewalks crowded with thousands of tourists (like Times Square at peak time). If it's hot, it's even less enjoyable.
The walking is level and you don't have to go down and up to get across the street from the train station (though you can) - there are level crossings. However, some of the sidewalks are very narrow and there are cobblestones and, if your sense of direction isn't good, you could take a wrong turn or two and end up walking more than you need.
I have done but only with small carry on. Too many people if you have large suitcases.
I've never used the underpass from the station, I walk to hotels in the Duomo area often. But I have only a carryon with sturdy wheels.
