Hello everybody! My wife and I are traveling all over Italy in July and are towards the end of planning everything we want to do, but ran into a snag... We are staying in Florence, but it seems that with everything we have planned (tours in Tuscany, a cooking class, etc) we really only have time to either explore the sights in Florence in detail or travel to Pisa. My wife has been to both places in the past but I have not. Some people I have talked to said that Pisa is worth skipping as it is too touristy...thoughts? Thanks!
Agree. Pisa is a one site town with the tower. Thirty minutes, you have seen it all. It is worth seeing but I would not trade a day in Florence for a run to Pisa. If Pisa is convenient, by all means stop. Florence is by far more interesting. Cannot believe you are staying in Florence but not seeing Florence. Kill one of the day trips and enjoy Florence.
Florence alone needs at least 2 days, just for the basic most famous sights (for Florence sights in detail you need a lifetime, since Florence has a vast share of the world's art treasures). If you have more than 2 days available, you can probably spare one afternoon for Pisa (1.5 hrs travel time, one way, including bus from Pisa station to Duomo+leaning tower). If you have 2 days or less for Florence, skip Pisa. Everything in Italy is full of tourists. Italy is a giant Disneyland.
What those guys said. Pisa, much as I enjoy the Field of Miracles, is relatively speaking a one-trick town. Not until you have exhausted Firenze.
Agreed. Pisa is very skippable, even with more time.
Thanks so much, everyone....confirming what I was thinking...
We were in Florence four days and originally planned a day trip to Pisa but I couldn't pull myself away from Florence. Next trip I will do at least a full week in Florence.
Don't ask a Florentine to speak well about Pisa. I think I was kind enough to Pisa in my previous post. SKIP THE PLACE, IT'S A WASTE OF TIME! (Ooops! The Florentine in me just came out)
