I am considering flying into Florence, then traveling to Venice to fly home. I only have 1 wk including travel time. To get the most out of my short trip, should I rent a car in Florence & drive to Venice?

Rent a car only if you want to stop in small towns in between that are not on the rail lines. Taking the train will save you time and money.

The car cannot help you in Florence because of the ZTL, and it is obviously worse than useless in Venice aitting in a garage collecting parking fees. And the trains between Florence and Venice travel at twice the legal auto speed limit.
