Florence used as home base

We will be in Florence for 6 nights. We want to see chiant, Pisa and some hill towns. Should we use Florence as home base and just use buses to visit all the surrounding areas? We would like to stay in a bed and breakfast not directly in the city, but will not have a car

Dale: Many travelers will tell you to spend a few days in Florence city center and then move 20-30 miles south to an agriturismo in Chianti. A car rental is the most efficient way to see hill top cities like Certraldo, San Gimignano, Volterra and Orvieto. (There are dozens of other interesting cities.) The roads are easily driven and in good condition. I just don't cherish riding anywhere on a bus. You can see 10 times as much traveling on your own.
But if you're going to go the bus route, stay in Florence really close to the train station. Buses line up across the street on the block beside and behind McDonalds.
