We want to make reservations for Accademia and Uffizi as Rick recommends. We also want to see the Science Museum (my son must see Galileo's finger) which is around the corner from the Uffizi. Our plan is to do the Accademia in the a.m. then the Science and Uffizi in the afternoon. How long will we need in Accademia? Science? Uffizi? and to walk between them? Thanks.
The question of how long you're going to spend in a particular place is subject to big variation depending on the person's interests, his group's interests, and how long you have to stand in line to get in. Just as a benchmark, Rick gives a time of 2 hours for his Uffizi tour (described in his book, all times given by me exclude standing in line time); 1.5 hours for his Science Museum tour; he does not give a time for the Accademia, some people see David and leave, others explore more. You can walk from the Accademia to Uffizi in 20 minutes or less.
The Science Museum is undergoing major renovations, so all that is being exhibited is in a limited space. I'm not sure if Galileo's finger is there, but you might want to double-check before going. Since the display is so limited, I would imagine that it wouldn't take more than 1 hour (maybe, signficantly less, depending upon how much is on display) there.
If you have more than one day, I would recommend doing the Uffizi and Accademia on different days, especiall if you have a kid in tow.
I would allow 2 hours for the Uffizi (mileage may vary, depending upon how much of an art fanatic you are) and 1-2 hours for the Accademia (ditto about above - many people go primarily to see David).
Thanks for the info about the Science Museum. Had no idea. I'll check it out. My son is 12 and studying Renaissance art in school this year so he's excited to see all Florence has to offer - including Galileo's finger.
Doreen,
My husband and I spent about 2hrs in the Science Museum. We took our time looking at all the pieces in there. I was a bit shocked looking at Galileo's finger, but it was fun. We were the only ones in the museum the day we went. You'll enjoy it. As for the Uffizi, it all depends on how in depth you look at the pieces of art. You could literally spend the entire day in there. We had audio guides and spent about half the day in the Uffizi. The Accademia was about 1 hr. We were only interested in seeing David. We tagged along on a tour and listened to the history behind David, which I suggest you listen too if there is a guide near by, very interesting history.
