Florence, Tuscany & Rome in 8 nights?

We are planning to spend a week in Italy after staying a few days with friends in Aix-en-Provence. The schedule has us leaving Aix for Italy on Fri. 4/6/18, then flying out of Rome to return to the U.S. on Sat. 4/14/18. We really want to focus this time in Italy on experiencing a little history/culture (Florence), a bit more time living well Italian-style (Tuscany) with a little taste of Rome at the end. Hoping to get some feedback on this schedule:

2 nt in Florence (see a few highlights, knowing we'll return one day)
1 nt in Siena (many say it's worth it even for a one-night stand, thoughts?)
3 nt in a Tuscan agriturismo (get a taste of the countryside, visit a few towns, wineries, etc.)
2 nt in Rome (again, we'll return one day for a longer stay, but since flight leaves from here, wanted to at least experience a few highlights)

Another approach would be to group all the Tuscany stuff under one "home-base", which would mean settling into one place
for 5 or 6 nights relatively close to Florence and Siena. Would love to hear arguments for one way or the other given our parameters. Or other potential itineraries for making the most of the short time we have for this trip?

If you inted to visit Pisa and Lucca in your tuscany stay, then I would have 2 places to stay.
Probably in Florence and a tour that does Pisa and Lucca in the same day.
So 3 nights.
and then 3 nights south of Siena to do the Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza and some abbeys(depending on time).
I would definitly stop in Orvieto on my way to Rome
If you don't intend to do Pisa and Lucca, Then I would think of one single agriturismo very close to Siena, so you are about 1 hour-1 hour 15 from Florence or the most southern villages like Montepulciano, just so you don't pack-unpack too many times.

Thanks claudecyr65. We won't be able to fit Pisa and Lucca into this trip, unfortunately. Any recommendations for a place (either a town or a specific agriturismo) near Siena that you'd recommend?

We'll most likely have a car to explore the Tuscan countryside, so we could certainly plan to drop it off in Orvieto (and see a bit of the town there) on our way to Rome, then take the train into Rome to finish out our trip.

Stay in Florence and then one more place in Tuscany.
Panzano, in Chianti, is between Siena and Florence on the historic Rt. 222 and would be an excellent base. You are surrounded by vineyards and wineries there. Do a full day trip to Siena. There is parking near the top of the city.
Two nights in Florence( get tickets in advance to see Michelangelo's "David" at l' Accademia)

Thanks Suki. Really warming to the idea of a couple of nights in Florence, then the rest of the time in a small town/agriturismo. Perhaps taking your idea and pushing it a bit further south. So after a couple of nights in Florence, we move to a place that's still within striking distance of Siena, but closer to some places that intrigue us like Montepulciano and Montalcino.

With so many great choices, I guess I can't really go wrong, can I? : )

I had a fantastic agriturismo 3 weeks ago for our second trip in this fantastic region, but a bit more south, though i did everything from there aside from Florence formwhich I had an appartement for 3 nights.
The agriturismo is called podere cunina. Affordable and absolutly everything you dream about an agriturismo in Tuscany. It is 10 minutes from Buonconvento, in what I believe is the nicest part of Tuscany, the crete senesi.
So we did siena one day, volterra and San gimignano one day, montepulciano pienza and the fantastic roads around these 2 towns. Did san galgano, sant Antimo abbey and montalcino one day.

You could also visit orvieto but drop the car in Rome. Wouldn't this make you save some time?
I brought back my car at the Termini 10 years ago in Rome. Yes it was funny let's say, but I didn't have any particular problems.
If you want to see some of what we did, here's my blog. It's in french but google translate will be your friend. :-)
You can change dates on the right. One story and multiple pictures per day of travelling

Thanks for sharing the link to your blog, claudecyr65. What a lovely trip!

Really appreciate all your recommendations as well. I'll check out all those towns and the place you stayed. Not sure my wife is ready for me to drive all the way into Rome, but we have some time to get used to the idea... : )

Dropping the car in Orvietto would probably be easier, hubestur. Then just grab a train into Rome as originally planned.

Thanks Kathy, that's what I think we're leaning toward. While I've driven a few times in Europe and even managed to drop our car off in the heart of Paris once without incident, I find it way more relaxing to stick to driving in the countryside and let the train take me into the big cities.
