Florence/Tuscany itinerary help

Ok, so here's the deal. In our trip next month, I've allotted 5 days to cover Florence and Tuscany, but don't know where is best to stay. We are arriving in Rome at noon on a Thursday and plan to head straight up to Tuscany, leaving for Venice the following Tuesday.

How should we split up our 5 days? We are choosing from Siena, Florence, and Orvieto.

Orvieto would be 1 night at most, and if we don't get there it's ok (we'll stop by on our way back to Rome). The others could be 2, 3, or even 4 or 5 nights.

So many options, seemingly little time. What fits best? Any thoughts?

We'll be training and/or busing it all the way. I price out a car every so often, but the various ZTL posts and the costs of renting a car have pretty well scared me off...

Okay, by train. You can take the airport shuttle train from the airport into Rome Termini train station, then a train from Rome Termini to Orvieto (1hr 15mins). Sleep the first night in Orvieto, you'll be jet-lagged after being on the plane all night, so stopping in Orvieto has the advantage of shortening your Thursday and giving you a smaller town to sleep off the jet lag and start slower on Friday. Explore Orvieto on foot Friday, take the train to Florence in the afternoon.Sleep in Florence Fri night through Monday night. It's 4 nights but really only Sat and Sunday exploring Florence (plenty to see), you'll use Monday to do a day trip to Siena, by bus or train, since the biggies are closed in Florence on Mondays. Then continue with the other part of your trip on Tuesday. This gives you the train schedules http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en. You don't need to buy tickets online.
