Kit, people have left glowing reviews of the Florence Walking Tour by the company Artviva (artviva.com) locatedin Florence. Check out their website and maybe it will appeal to you as a pleasant way to spend half a day.

The Rick Steves Italy and the Rick Steves Florence guidebooks both have really great one day itineraries from which you could draw. Strongly advised. Once you are familiar with that content return here with specific questions and there are dozens of us who are happy to help you find specifics.
