I'll be visiting Florence (3 days), Montecatini (7 days), Cinque Terre (day trip by van from Montecatini), and Rome (3 days) from late Sept to mid October and would like suggestions of things to see and/or skip in each place. I enjoy visiting some museums (but not every single museum/church in a town), taking guided small group walking tours, finding "hidden gems," eating great food, strolling the markets, beach time, and maybe taking a cooking class somewhere along the way. Our Florence hotel is very near the train station and central market. The CT day trip is an organized one (I'm travelling with a small group of friends) - should I plan to go back another day for more time to enjoy the beaches and views (and if so, what's the best way to get there on my own?). With only 3 days each in Florence and Rome, should I just plan to hit the "high points" this trip and save more exploration for future trips? Any hints and suggestions greatly appreciated!
For great food walk at least a block off the main tourist sites. I say at least because, well, there's a tourist sight around just about every corner. Order the special of the day posted on the board. Whatever it is will be good. Now I do live in San Diego but...I'd blow off any so called beach time. Bit nippy in Sep/Oct and frequently the beach is rocky not sandy. Use the time better walking about in the early hours of the day or poking about. Truffles are in season in October....my mouth is drooling.
