Exit the arrivals and turn left.
Like most buses and trams in Italy¹, you must get a ticket before getting on and time-stamp it on board before the next stop.
From that moment you can use all buses and trams for X minutes, transfers included in any direction.
Drivers do not check tickets, inspectors do. This implies that passengers with non-stamped tickets are fined on the spot even if they showed the driver their tickets.
¹ with the relevant exception of Venice.
You can buy the bus or tram tickets from the tabaccaio market T, either carnet or single tickets.
In Florence, you can also buy your ticket thriller your iPhone, sending a texto to:
Ataf no: 4880105 when you ho onboard.
This might be helpful when you are in a hurry.
There are sometimes 2 trams waiting at the airport station. If that's the case, ask which one departs next. The crossing to reach the far tram is in front of the trams (i.e. to your right as you face the side of the trams). Note that there are 2 tram stops near the SMN train station, one beside the station on Via Alamanni and the other on the opposite side at Piazza dell'Unita.
