We, two active seniors, arriving at Santa Maria Novella train station at 10:40 am and need to get to the airport to pick up a car. We are spending a week in Tuscany (Siena area) and want to avoid the ZTL's so we are not picking up a car downtown. Are buses available to the Airport or should we just take a Taxi? We will have two pieces of luggage each, but both are carry on size. Thanks.

The "Vola in Bus" service runs every hour and costs 5 euro. Buy tickets on the bus. 20 to 25 minute ride.

If you are still on time to change and the downtown pick up saves you money, consider changing your plans. The ZTL is not a problem on exit, because the cameras are located on entry only. All downtown rentals are on via Borgognissanti or via Maso da Finiguerra. Exiting the city center from there is a breeze with no chance of infringing any ZTL.

Roberto, Thank you for the response. I am sure this is a silly question since there must be a way for re-entry, but if the cameras into the ZTL are for entry only then how can a car be returned if the the car agency is in the ZTL? Doug

On re-entry there is an itinerary that will avoid all cameras. Unless your rental car is Europcar, which is located on borgognissanti also, but closer to piazza Ognissanti. In their case there is no way to avoid being caught by the camera. That doesn't mean you get fined. The ZTL has exemptions. Those who return the car to a rental office (or those who go to their hotel to check in) are allowed to enter for a limited mount of time. The rental office however (or the hotel) needs to get online within a certain time frame and register your license plate as an allowable entry so that the City does not issue the fine based on the picture. I think what goes on sometimes is that the rental office (or the hotel) forgets to do so and people get fined. If you need to return the car at Europcar in Borgognissanti, make sure they register your entry online as soon as you arrive (I think they have 3 hours to do so).
Altrnatively, if you don't feel comfortable, and your rental is with Europcar, pick up from Borgognissanti and return in Via Forlanini, which is a location in the Novoli district, next to the Social Sciences campus of the University of Florence. From there take a taxi back to the city center or the city bus no. 22.
