We are arriving in Florence on a Sunday. Is there train service to Volterra? Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Volterra? Thanks.
Priscilla From Florence you will have to go by bus to Volterra. It is a lovely hill town.
We stayed at Albergo Etruria- albergoetruria.it- needs a bit of updating but the breakfast is great. Loved the Etruscan ruins and looking into the Alabaster workshops. We were there on Market day and was great to mingle with the locals.
Priscilla, I have made this trip several times from Florence to Volterra. The previous poster is correct there is no direct train at all to Volterra from Florence, but there is bus service, which requires a change in a small town, but no problems with the change at all. I have stayed at Hotel La Locanda in Volterra, and it is in an excellent location right near one of the gates of the city and the ancient Roman Theater. Google it and check it out,. excellent sized rooms, with a great breakfast. If you need more advice pm me. Naomi
Keep in mind that buses to Volterra are very limited on Sundays. There's one bus-to-bus connection in Colle Val d'Elsa at 4:45pm and one train-to-bus connection in Pontedera at 7:30pm. If those times don't match your itinerary, then you might consider staying in Florence (or Siena) your first night and then going to Volterra on Monday. I too have stayed at Albergo Etruria and would recommend it. Not fancy, but it's well run.
