We took this trip in September and it relaxing but be aware the overhead luggage compartment even for a carryon size bag is small. We ended up putting our bags on the floor and propping our feet on them. Also, as you travel from east to west, if you seat on the right side of the train, you will get a good look at the Carrera Marble quarry.

kathy,

That trip is very easy but will involve two or three train changes, depending on which departure time you choose. You can see all the solutions on the Trenitalia or Bahn.de websites. You'll need to use the Italian names for each station when researching trips or buying tickets. The trip will usually involve different types of trains (ie: Regionale, Freccia, Intercity), and there are different "rules" for each type.

One of the quickest and easiest trips will be a departure from Firenze S.M. Novella at 10:28, arriving Vernazza at 13:23 (time 2H:55M, two changes at Pisa Centrale and Monterosso). On that trip, you'll actually be going past Vernazza and then will have to double back. I used an arbitrary date to check so the schedule may vary slightly, depending on when you're travelling.

If you use that solution, you'll be using two Regionale and one Intercity train. If you're buying tickets locally, you MUST validate the Regionale tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or risk hefty fines. The Intercity train will have compulsory seat reservations, so the ticket can ONLY be used on the one train specified on the ticket. The layover in Monterosso is 27 minutes, so you'll have time for a coffee and a brief look at the town.
