We have been notified our train for Friday, 5 September, from Florence to Venice has been canceled due to train strike. Considering renting a vehicle for 5 adults to salvage the day and non-refundable tour. Is this a straight forward journey or should we opt for a car with driver? Thanks!
3 hour drive
Very straightforward
Have you checked Google maps?
There are directions here on how to enter Florence to return the car and avoid ZTLs
For 5 passengers and luggage you will need a fairly large car-European trunks are small!
All drivers must have an IDP -required by law and rental agencies can refuse to rent if you don’t have that -must get in US so if you are already in italy you might be refused the rental
( many do not ask for it although it is required)

You can get the IDP at AAA, even if you’re not a member.
Take Itabus as an easier alternative.

Thanks for the input; will try to get IDP in morning at AAA, flight in afternoon. I’ll try to find the ZTL information in the forum now that we’ll be driving. Appreciate all the expertise!
The drive is very easy (all freeway after you get out of Florence) however 5 adults with luggage are hard to accommodate in a regular car. Try to get a large station wagon. You might have to place some bags on your laps still, but Vans are too expensive to rent (like 3 compact cars).
