Florence to Venice

I read I may need to reserve a seat because this train route is busy. Does anyone know how far in advance I would need to reserve if this train leaves hourly?

This week is a very busy travel period. It is now Tuesday August 6 at 06:27 am in Florence.
I am looking at the trenitalia website and NO train is sold out. Seats are available on all trains today, starting from the very first one leaving in 2 hours. There is one fast Freccia train departing to Venice every hour. The chance of experiencing a sell out is very small. If it happens, I can guarantee you that: 1 - First Class tickets will always be available 2 - If second class tickets are sold out for the train departing next, they will be available certainly on the train leaving one hour later.

Thank you, it's not until mid sept, so it should be even less busy than it is now...hopefully.

Char, Just to clarify, you don't need to reserve a seat because that "route is busy". If you're travelling on the Freccia trains, reservations are always compulsory! Those will be included with your ticket if you're using P-P tickets, and are specific to a particular train and departure time. You MUST board only the train specified on your reservation/ticket, or you'll face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! The fines are currently about €50 PP plus the cost of the reservation (about €10). If you're ever travelling on Regionale trains (which don't require reservations), you MUST validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or again hefty fines. If you're using P-P tickets, you can easily buy those a day or two before travel. As Roberto pointed out, there are LOTS of trains on that route every day, so it's highly unlikely that you wouldn't be able to get a ticket. I normally just buy tickets at Firenze SMN using the Kiosks, and I've never had a problem getting a ticket for the trains that I want. Happy travels!
