Florence to sorrento - help with train

I have information from Rick Steve's books on travel logistics from Rome to sorrento, but this trip we will be in Florence and then traveling down to sorrento.

What is the best route? Do we bypass Rome or is that the easiest route?

Thanks !!

Carla,

The easiest route by train is high speed Freccia from Firenze SMN to Napoli Centrale (possibly a stop at Roma Termini), and then the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi (which is downstairs from Centrale). The Circumvesuviana has several lines, and the one you'll be using goes by Pompeii on the way (Sorrento is the end of the line). You can buy your tickets at the Garibaldi station.

Be sure to watch your belongings on the Circumvesuviana, as it has a bit of a "reputation".

If your budget will allow, you could also use a car service from Naples to Sorrento.

You can book Firenze SMN to Napoli Centrale on www.trenitalia.com up to 120 days in advance. You must use the italian spellings in the from and to fields. Most services do not require a change of trains in Rome (it is clearly shown on the website if a change is required). The very cheapest tickets which sell quickly are non refundable or changeable but offer big savings.

For Napoli to Sorrento you just buy your ticket at the station in Napoli.

Your train from Florence to Naples (on the way to Sorrento) will go through Rome, as that's how the tracks are laid. Whether you have to change trains in Rome, or merely stop there without changing trains, depends on the particular trains you take. Enough of them should go direct that it shouldn't be a problem to find one that doesn't require a change.
