I have 4 days to spend in Florence/Tuscany before heading to Sorrento. Should I spend a day in Florence and rent a car to drive thru Tuscany and drop off car in Sorrento or should I base 3 days in Florence and/or Tuscany and then take the train to Naples? Going 3rd week of Sept 2009

I would definitely base 3 days in Florence/Tuscany. There is so much to see in Florence/Tuscany you will find that 3 days will hardly be enough. We took the train from Rome to Naples and then taxied to the Porto di Napoli and took a ferry to Sorrento. It was really inexpensive and just a beautiful way to get there!

By all means, take the train from Florence to Sorrento. Rent a car for a day trip out of Florence to drive thru Tuscany if you wish, or ride the bus to Siena for the day. Keep in mind that you cannot drive into Florence, nor would you want to.
