Florence to Sienna by train or bus and...

Hi,
leaving for Florence on Saturday. Would you suggest a train or bus for a day trip to Florence?
I would also like to go to Villa Demidoff. I am just wondering if I should rent a car. If I do, I am guessing that would be at airport?

A friend from Florence suggested: "If renting a car, on way is Chianti region. On the way, stop at San Gimignano first, and then to Monteriggioni before arriving in Siena. If you have chance, spend time in Fiesole or Villa Demidoff to see Giante dell'appennino.
Stop for dinner at La Reggia deghi Etruschi"

So, for those of you who know more than I, is this a good idea? Maybe rent a car early in morning and spend the entire day doing the above?

thx!

The bus in Sienna is closer to the center of town. You have to take a taxi to the train.

A day toodling around Tuscany in a car is one the most delightful ways to spend a day. Trust your Italian friend and enjoy every second. Obey speed limits though. There are fixed speed cameras in many locations along the road (mailbox-sized metal boxes)

jimlanza, sorry but you cannot do even half of this list in one day. Siena alone consumes an entire day for most folks.

Fiesole and Villa Demidoff are north of Florence and not on the way to Siena, which is south of the city.

Here's someone who recently asked about doing Siena and San G. by bus + train in a day:

I have to agree with Kathy; if you really want to SEE these towns you need TIME to absorb them. Try to see San Gimiginano and Monteriggioni in one day; take another full day to see Siena, perhaps on the way back to Florence stop off for a short trip to Chianti. I hope you have the time to really see these areas....
