My husband and I are spending 3 weeks in Italy this November. Due to pre-booked flights we need to fly into and out of Rome. Our flight out leaves at 2.30pm on a Tuesday afternoon - should we travel from Florence the day before - or will that be sufficient time to make the trip from Florence on the Tuesday morning. I have been reading about Italy's train strikes and I am worried that we will miss our flights. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
With the way the train strikes have been going on over here in Italy, I wouldn't take any chances. Grab a cheap hotel by the Termini in Rome, sleep there and wake up at a reasonable hour and catch the subway to the airport.
Some may think me overly-cautious, but I ALWAYS spend the night before a big flight like that in the city the aircraft is leaving from. Just too many things can go wrong, and the airline won't accept the "my train was late" as an excuse. In Italy even one broken-down train can have a ripple effect across much of the system. IMHO, far better to bid farewell to Florence the evening before, enjoy a good sleep in Rome, wake up, have a leisurely breakfast and a stroll, then head to the airport. You'll have a long-enough day(s) as it is with your flight home!
Check out the Beehive. It is a small hotel, hostel and art space 2 blocks from the Termini station in Rome. Rick recommends them in his book. I agree with the others re: train strikes in Italy. I would be much more comfortable staying in Rome and getting to the airport than coming from Florence and getting to the airport all in the same day.
I'd definately go to Rome the night before. To get there in time to check in and get through security, you would be in an awful rush. Also, the trains often run late, and we missed our connecting train a couple of times while we were there in September.
