Florence to Rome airport including sites

I am looking for a fun way to get from Florence to the Rome airport (with luggage). I know about the trains but was hoping that we could find some sort of trip or company to take is through Tuscany on the way. We have plenty of time, we are staying at the airport the night before our flight so have no desire to get to the airport hotel too early. Would prefer a way to get there and see some sights along the way. Any suggestions appreciated!

Rent a car in Florence, drive to Rome taking the Via Cassia instead of the freeway. It will take you all day but that was the way to go to Rome for 2000 years before the 1950's before the A1 autostrada was built.
Some of the most historic villages and towns are along that corridor.
Return the car at the airport before your flight or even at night. The airport rental center is always open.

The stretch between FLorence and Rome is full of wonderful towns and spots like Tarquinia or Sovana for Etruscan ruins. You could spend weeks there, but a long day, starting as early as possible and meandering to FCO would allow several great picturesque stops. I would rent a car at the FLorence airport (thus avoiding ZTLs in Florence which are notorious and then drive as suggested above to FCO and drop the car. If you arrive in Rome by early evening, you could then take the airport train to Trastevere and have a nice dinner before heading back to the airport hotel. We had one of our most magical nights in Rome that way dining under the stars in a little alley restaurant in Trastevere on a one night stop between Barcelona and London. (we had spent 10 days in Rome a week earlier)

If you can't drive for some reason then getting the driver is a great idea and worth what it costs.

I am traveling with my daughter and neither of us feel comfortable with driving. But the thought of hiring someone or doing a tour that picks up in Florence and drops us in Rome with our luggage is very appealing. We would love to have some time to enjoy the countryside before our last night in Italy. I appreciate the suggestions and would welcome more ideas! Thanks so much.

If you or your daughter drive at home, you can certainly drive there. You will be driving on two lane highways in the countryside and traffic will be limited on those roads. You can return the car outside of Rome at the airport if you don't feel comfortable with big city traffic.
You can pay someone to drive you to Rome, but the cost is going to be about $500 (400 euro) via fast freeway, if you ask them to tour you all day through the via Cassia it can't be less than $1000.
