Any advice of going to Ravenna from Florence for the day? Looking at RS' train map, it looks like a direct train line, but in trying to decipher the Italian train lines, it doesn't seem to be the case. Suggestions? advice? thanks!!!!
Right now, there appears to be only one direct regional train a day, leaving Florence SMN at 7:29 and arriving Ravenna at 10:02. Every thing else is a connection at Bologna. The line through the Appenine's between Florence and Bologna is almost exclusively reserved for high speed trains.
thank you kindly!
Actually, delving further into this dilemma, the direct train takes a different rail line through the mountains to Faenza. There are 7 trains a day from Florence to Faenza. Only the first continues on to Ravenna. Four connect to a bus to Ravenna after a 53 min change. One at 13:29 connects to a train at Faenza after a 73 min change, and one at 17:40 connects to a train at Faenza after a 6 minute change.
Since none of these except the first and last are very efficient changes, the Italian Rail schedule wants to you to change at Bologna after a fast train from SMN.
again, mille gracie
Actually it is nearly that. I have recent personal experience with both parts of that trip. All the Regionale trains between Florence and Bologna involve a change or two, and the long stop at Prato. In addition to the .ItaloTren and Trenitalia high speed trains between Florence and Bologna in 37 minutes there are a few InterCity trains which take virtually the same amount of time. The service from Bologna to Ravenna is an all second class older Regionale train with windows that open. Hint - there are a number of declassified former First Class carriages in the trains with 1 + 2 seating, they are used as Second Class (little note in Italian on the door into the saloon) and more comfortable than the 2+2 Second Class cars.
