Florence to Provence w/toddler

Hi! Traveling from Florence to Provence with my husband & 2 year old in June!
We have 7 days btw landing in Florence and needing to drive to Provence where we’ll meet family for a trip there - planning to stay in Florence half the week and another place (where?) the other half of the week. A few questions:

  1. Budget friendly / family friendly place to stay in Florence for 3-4 nights
  2. Favorite Florence restaurants and attractions
  3. Recommendations for second place to visit for 3 days - somewhere btw Florence and Provence
  4. Fun places to take a 2 year old?
  5. Any special advice for toddlers in Italy? We have traveled to France with our toddler and know what we’re getting into, so only positive help and ideas please :) Thank you!

Where in Provence? It’s a rather large area

You don’t want to rent a car in Italy and drop in “Provence” as that will incur very expensive drop off fee

Take a train to Nice and rent car there

We need more information

Driving from Florence to eygalieres, Provence, France where my in-laws live. We spend a week there each year so don’t need any recommendations around Provence, more looking for where to go along the way. Was thinking, maybe Nice would be a nice place to visit as our second stop, also considered Portofino , but also interested in other ideas that the community has.

Regarding no. 3, some ideas on the Italian Riviera could be:

  • Monterosso or next door Levanto, if you are interested in seeing the Cinque Terre, however it's likely to be very crowded in June
  • Moneglia
  • Sestri Levante

On the French side, I like Menton.

There are many other places of course, but the above have decent beaches for kids.

Portofino is ok to visit for an hour or so but there is no beach, and it's just an overpriced harbor for rich people's yachts. I wouldn't stay there for 3 days.
