Hello! We’ll be going from Florence to Praiano in Sept. Any best suggestions on travel? I was thinking train to Salerno and then a private car to Praiano. I’m worried if it’s too late, we won’t be able to catch a bus from Salerno to Praiano.
I am just arriving from our trip taking the Salerno-Praiano route. We took a train from Rome to Salerno. We booked a Travelmar ferry from Salerno to Positano. Once we landed in Positano we grabbed a water taxi to our rental home in Marina di Praia Beach. Depending on the location of your stay in Praiano it may be best to take a taxi. We were very fortunate that our place was on the beach.
Thanks! I’m just concerned that we’ll be leaving Florence that morning and on a 7+ hour train ride to Salerno (connecting through Rome) that we could potentially get in late and miss the last bus, ferry, etc.
We actually did originate from Florence changing trains in Rome. We left Florence at 8:14, changed trains in Rome and ended in Salerno at 11:41. Our ferry left at 14:10 so we had plenty of time to catch a lunch near the port. The train station and port are a mere 1 1/2 blocks away so it was very easy.
Also the ferry is only about a 1 1/2 hour journey.
The sights from the water are amazing.
There are fast trains direct from Florence to Salerno that do not change in Rome
About 4 hours or less
If you know your date you can purchase in advance at a discount
Schedule will be updated 6/12 so you don’t see those trains yet
The "fast trains" book like air tickets, more expensive as the time approaches. The lowest fares are non-refundable, and non-changeable. I was refused getting on one train earlier, even though seats were available. We sat on our luggage for the hour, rather than pay the walk-up fare and forfeit the discount tickets. But the speed difference is considerable.
Private transfers are quite common on the AC. AFAIR the busses tend to be half-hourly during business hours. They're really crowded at the Sorrento end, but probably not as bad in Salerno. If you'd have to take a taxi from the bus stop in Priano, you might as well book a car. We used our hotel's land-service partner for a Sorrento trip.
I trust you don't have to get somewhere fast when you leave Praiano.
Italo runs 8 direct trains a day from Firenze to Salerno, all taking 4 hours and something. Trenitalia has more runs, but Italo is already e-mailing its summer discount codes.
Italo's top, on-the-day tickets cost € 70 per person; the cheapest, least flexible, ones only € 34,9: you can save a lot purchasing in advance.
Thanks, everyone! I will check on June 12th as it does appear that schedule hasn't been released yet!
