Florence to Pompeii by train?

Hello all, We will be leaving Florence to go to Sorrento. I would like to go take the train in the morning and see Pompeii in the afternoon, then on to our hotel in Sorrento. Is that a good idea or should I just head straight to Sorrento then day trip to Pompeii (we only have 2 nights in Sorrento though). Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Your plan will work. You can take a high-speed Eurostar Italia train directly from Florence to Naples, departing as early as 07:00 and arriving at 10:10. Go to the lower level of Napoli Centrale and buy a ticket all the way to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana commuter train. Get off at Pompei-Scavi, see the site, and continue on to Sorrento on the same ticket.

Tim - thank you so much! So, would you recommend buying ticket ahead (there are 5 of us) for Florence - Naples on the Trenitalia site, then just buy the local ticket there? Thanks again!

For the leg to Naples you could buy ahead of time and qet the mini fares which are discount fares for that train and time. From Naples on it is a local train with no advance purchase. However, two types of tickets. One for about an hour which is the cheapest and a day ticket. You may want to compare prices - it might be cheaper to get two, one hour tickets than a day ticket because you will be at Pompeii longer than an hour. These tickets MUST BE VALIDATED in the yellow boxes. If it very expensive if you forget.
