Florence to Pienza via Siena

We were thinking of renting a car and travelling to Siena, then spending the night in Siena and travelling to Pienza for 2 nights. Would love some suggestions as to stops along the way from Florence to Siena and then from Siena to Pienza and anywhere in between. I've had to plan a whole month in Italy and Sicily and my brain is so fogged right now, any help with itinerary would be greatly appreciated.

Two ways from Florence to Siena: 1- freeway (Raccordo Firenze-Siena): along the way (or slight deviations) are San Gimignano, Colle Val d'Elsa and Monteriggioni (the last 2 require no deviatio since they are along the freeway, San Gimignano is a short detour from the Poggibonsi exit). 2- the famous Chianti road (Stradale Statale, or SS 222). Along the way a lot of small villages and wineries in the wine producing area (e.g. Greve, Castellina, Panzano, etc). In the Pienza area there are several towns, such as Montalcino (brunello wine), San Quirico, Montepulciano, Chianciano, Basilica of San Galgano, etc) Look here for ideas:

Thanks for your suggestions, I will check out the web site you provided. Had another thought of going to Volterra instead of Siena and spending the night there, then onto Siena (day trip) then to Pienza. Do you think that is feasable, would still want to go via SR222 possibly up to Castellina then on over to Volterra what do you think of this????

Volterra is a little of a detour from the freeway route, but certainly doable. Exit at Colle Val d'Elsa. If you take SS 222, it's longer, but still doable. Take 222 to Castellina, then go to Colle VE from there and proceed to Volterra.
The next day, from Volterra to Siena, stop in Monteriggioni for a visit. It's worth it.
