Florence to Paris with two days

We plan to spend at least 5 nights in Florence sometime in mid-October or early November (been there many times already) and do some day tripping with a friend who has never been to Europe. From there, we are headed to Paris (which we have done a dozen times and love). We have two days to spend after Florence between needing to be in Paris. Besides directly flying, are there any suggestions? We thought about the Bernina Express train from Milan to Zurich then taking the high speed from Zurich to Paris. (Oh how I miss the night train from Italy to Paris.)

Hotel rates in Zurich are - well "ouch"! As for the Bernina Express, I understand you can book a "regular train" on the same tracks, but are there special times for such a train and how do you know it's the same route?

This is the hardest part of our itinerary. Those two days, and what to do before Paris.

If you just have 1 night, the Bernina Express is a bit ambitious - you'll face about 16 hours of train travel over 2 days, of which only 4 hours are scenic.
If you have 2 nights, then why not, but Zürich is not the right place to break the journey (it is too far to be reached from Florence in a day). Look at Chur or Pontresina / Samedan instead.

Have you been to Turin? Stopping over in Turin reduces total train travel time to 8.5 hours, and Turin is a great city for a night or two.

Thanks Balso. Thought about that. Just looking for a good stop over point that breaks up that long journey to Paris. I am starting to agree that the Bernina is too much of a long journey. Just want to be somewhere that we can catch a high speed to Paris and isn't a long journey from Florence to where-ever.

In November I’ll be wrapping up the Best of Tuscany tour. I decided to return to Turin and suggest it as an alternative. It’s a great, under-touristed city. From there I’m going to Lyon and then directly to CDG for my flight home. You can get a direct train from Turin to Paris Gare-de-Lyon that’s about a 6 hour trip.
