Florence to Paris by Way of Chamonix

We have read about taking the gondolas over the Alps, and our family of 4 is finally going to be making the trip at the end of June.
We will be staying in Florence, and would like to go from there over the Alps and on to Paris. We plan to stay in Aosta for a couple nights before catching the gondola from La Palud (Courmeyer) over the alps to Chamonix, to catch the train on into Paris.
What I am having a hard time figuring out is the best way to get from Florence to La Palud.
Has anyone ever rented a car and been able to drop it near La Palud to cross the Alps and take the train on the other side?
Any advice you have would be much appreciated!

Hi Michelle. One way would be to take the train to Aosta, then when done in Aosta, take the bus from there to Courmeyer. For train, see trenitalia.com; use Firenze SMN for station name in Florence. For bus, just google 'bus Aosta to Courmeyer', looks like there are inexpensive buses every hour or two. Car rental also might work; you would have to do internet search to see if any car rental drop places in Aosta or Courmeyer. Enjoy your trip!

There is also the SAVDA bus from Milan to Courmayeur (stops in Novara as well). It might be faster than the train to Aosta.
Europcar rental car is in Aosta. They also have an office in Chamonix, but you need to check about the international drop off charges, which can be high. But maybe, since it's just across the border they may be lower. Inquire.
