Florence to Orvieto

We are staying 3 days in Firenze and 2 days in Orvieto - BUT I double-booked the night of October 16….so we leave Florence on Oct. 15, staying in Orvieto the nights of the 16th and 17th. We have to find 1 night…the 15th either on the way to Orvieto, or to just scoot up to Fiesole to take the train to Orvieto the next day. In your opinion would it be better to stay in Fiesole that one night so close to Firenze, or head south for that night, maybe near Lago Trasimeno, or Arezzo? Help! Thank you!

Why would you “scoot up to Fiesole to take train to Orvieto”?

Take the train from Florence
Can’t you find a place inFlorence or Orvieto?

It sounds like you're going to have a "find" a night somewhere. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find an extra night somewhere in Florence or especially in Orvieto and just extend either city a day. Packing and moving - knowing you're going to be doing it again the next day - isn't ideal but it looks like what you're facing.

Arezzo has 1 hour trains to Orvieto with no change so that could be a solid choice for an extra overnight. It has a few sights, great piazzas and excellent food choices so if definitely worth a day.

I might also think about maybe someplace like Siena for an extra night. There are train solutions out of Siena that are as fast or faster than Florence so you wouldn't have to backtrack to Florence but it won't be as fast as Arezzo if that matters to you.

Have a great trip,

Thank you so much Tod. In fact I had sort of settled on Sienna for the night, in my mind. We are traveling light - backpacks - so packing is not a big deal. My concern was the transportation from Sienna to Orvieto. And I didn't want to spend 3 nights in Orvieto. But you have alleviated my concern about the transportation issue between Sienna and Orvieto, and I'm confident we can sort out that little hitch in the giddyup. Great info. Thanks again.

You're welcome mkghiglia2,

There are about 2 hour trains about every 1:20 from 12:15 onwards through the day. My only caveat is if you need to be in Orvieto before 14:27 you might reconsider because the morning options are awful but as long as 12:15 as the earliest departure works for you Siena is a good option. You need to change in Chiusi but with light luggage that is no big deal. At worst you'll need to cross under and switch to another platform.

I'm a big fan of the Trenitalia app that let's you check schedules, buy tickets and track trains on your phone. This is especially handy if you don't have set schedule to go from one place to another and want to get tickets when you walk up rather than plan ahead.

I'm going to be in Siena on the 10th so we'll just miss each other. Hey, speaking of which you will be in Siena while the floors of the cathedral are uncovered. If you have any interest don't miss it because there is a brief window to see the famous floors.

Have a great trip,

Oh thank you soooo very much for that piece of info!!! I am so excited to see the FLOORS! Getting so fired up. It’s our 50th wedding anniversary, and my husband has not liked to travel, but we will have none of that curmudgeoning! We have cousins and friends we are staying with, trying to avoid the crush-sites as best we can. But 25 days of heaven for me, and now the final piece is locked in.
