Florence to Naples and Sorrento...skip Naples?

My husband and I want to see museum in Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast. We leave Florence on a Thurs and need to return to Rome on Sunday. We figure part of Thurs will be spent in transit. We are not sure if we should leave Florence by 8 or 9 am to arrive in Naples say by Noon or 1pm. If we do this, is it enough time to visit the museum, get lunch/dinner then leave for Sorrento? Is it worth staying the one night night in Naples? We could do the "Slice of Neopolitan Life" walk in the evening. The alternate plan was to travel straight through to Sorrento on Thurs and check out the town and then backtrack to see Pompeii. We need a little guidance to get the order right. Seems like a lot of traveling back and forth in this area. Suggestions please and thank you!

Yes, there's a lot of traveling back-and-forth in his area. My two cents: - leave Florence as early as possible and stop in Naples for the museum. Have lunch there, too. Move on to Sorrento to arrive before sunset and dine there. - Friday go to Pompeii and Herculaneum. It's a long day but doable. I would see Pompeii in the morning, then go to Herculaneum for lunch and to see the site. A guide in Pompeii will help you uinderstand what you are seeing, and then you can apply that knoweldge to self-tour Herculaneum. - Saturday take the bus -- as early as you can! -- to Amalfi. Stop in Positano if you like.
- Sunday you can leave Sorrento early and be in Rome by noon or 1:00, or you can stop in Naples for that "Slice of Naples" walk and arrive Rome a little later. The walk takes some time. I'd allow at least 3-4 hours, excluding the National Arch. Musuem, which you will have seen on Thursday. If you are exhausted by the thought of this, skip the Naples walk and get to Rome in time to enjoy the late afternoon/early evening.

Laurel, you give the best advice. I was "evesdropping" on this question, because I had the same question perking in my head.

If you want to see the Amalfi coast, I would suggest the bus from Sorrento but the boat back. Different perspective and much less crowded than the return bus. Buses for the Amalfi Coast leave from the front of the Circumvesuviana station beginning at about 8:20 or 8:30am.

Good advice from Laurel and Zoe, can't argue with it, but it leaves no time to spend time in and enjoy Sorrento itself, my favorite place of all in Italy. I would choose either Herculaneum or Pompeii, and allot that time to Sorrento.

Thanks for the advice! One more question....for spending the day in Naples, what is the best way to store our luggage for the day? We will travel light...one carry on rolling luggage and a backpack .

Trenitalia's website says there is a Deposito bagagli in Napoli Centrale. Rick's book says near track 5....

Or you could take an early train on Sunday to Pompeii (check the luggage there) then continue on to Naples and an evening train to Rome. For me, trying to visit Herculaneum and Pompeii in the same day is trying to fit in too much.
