Florence to Milan/Heart of Italy 9 days

I am planning on taking Rick's 9 day tour of the Heart of Italy which ends in Florence. I am having difficulty finding ways to get back to the states (Chicago). One option is to take the train to Milan and fly home from there. However, I don't know how far the train station in Milan is from the airport so I don't know if I can make the connection for the available flight with check in etc.. Also, I am very interested if anyone else has taken this tour and how they got back home. I have looked at all sorts of possibilities ( flying out of Venice which is where I am flying in to but again there is a train that may delay my stay) but keep running into road blocks (ie. no flights out of the city to Chicago or the train gets in late and I would have a lay over over night before leaving the next morning which means a hotel stay which I am trying to avoid if possible.) Thanks Jacquie

Why not fly from Florence? You won't find direct flights out of Florence to the US (as far as I've seen), but morning flights from Florence go to European hubs with lots of direct flights to the US. There will be plenty of flight options to Chicago. Just enter Florence and Chicago into any of the flight search websites. I can get from Florence to San Francisco by midafternoon, with an early morning Florence departure, so it should be possible to get to Chicago at a reasonable time. It's a short taxi ride from old center of Florence to airport (15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic) and there are also busses that run (although I've never used them... flights too early to hassle with busses).

I just checked out from KAYAK.com. You can fly from Chicago to Vince and fly back to Chicago from Florence with stop over in Amsterdam. No problem.

Depending on how early your return flight is, you might want to reserve a taxi the night before - and I'll bet you can share the cab with fellow tour ages.
