I have 8 days in Florence and would like to use one of the days to visit Milan (just the Duomo and the church of St Ambrose). I would leave Florence very early and do a short stop in Pavia on the way (30 min south of Milan). I'd be using the high speed train. Is this a crazy plan? I've always wanted to see the Duomo in Milan, and this is my best chance. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!
I was right there with you until you threw in Pavia. You should poke around a little more on Trenitalia, I think. Pavia is not on the way from Florence to Milan by train. In fact, to get from Florence to Pavia, you have to go to Milan first and change trains. Good luck.
Florence to Milan is an hour and 45 minutes on the Eurostar, so well within day-trip range. I see that Pavia is 23 minutes from Milano Centrale station, so if there were something you were dying to see there, I guess you could go back and forth for a brief visit. Best to soak up Milan for the whole day, though. Check out train schedule specifics on the German railways site: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml
The high-speed Eurostars make one stop at Bologna on the way to Milan. No small stations. I put in Florence to Pavia on Trenitalia to see if I could get local trains but no such luck. All runs to Pavia from Florence will take you to Milan first. Total time to Pavia is 2hrs 33min.
Assuming you are going for the Certosa? I haven't looked this time, but my memory is that it is not particularly close to the station. Haven't been, yet, previous times we missed it due to the location. Have you arranged transportation from the station to the Certosa di Pavia?
Thanks all! This sounds quite do-able - I'm relieved.
