has anyone taken the bus from Florence to Greve, or beyond? we're staying in Greve for 3 days during the week in July. this will be the only time during our vacation that we won't be useing a train for transportation. would it be better to rent a car? thank you in advance for your opions'.
We had a car when we stayed in Greve, but we used the bus to go back and forth to Florence. It is very easy to catch the bus on the main road through town. You can ride it into Florence, or go the other direction to Siena. Greve is about 1/2 way between the 2 so it takes about an hour to get to either one. The bus in Florence drops you right at the train station, so you could catch a train to other places from there. When we were there in 2008, the bus ran from about 5 AM until about 8 PM. We always tried to catch a bus around 7:00 so that if we missed it, we knew there would be another one. You can go on the SITA webs site and look at the schedule. We picked up the schedule at the TI when we got there. If you mainly want to get to FLorence, I do not recommend renting a car. We had one, but my husband refused to drive it anywhere near downtown FLorence after a particularly trying experience in 2003 :) Riding the bus worked really well for us and I highly recommend it. We loved staying in Greve. Make sure the place you are staying is within walking distance to the town. If you are there on Saturday, they have a great town market. I envy you going there, it was a real highlight for us on our trip. If you plan on taking the bus to get to Greve, you could ask the place you are staying to send you the current schedule so that you know what times you can catch the bus. In the busiest times of the day (rush hour-this is a bus that a lot of people commute on) the bus went about every 10 minutes. During slower times, it ran about every 1/2. If I remember right, the last couple of the day are about an hour apart.
thank you very much for your reply. I would rather not drive, just kick back and enjoy the veiw. we're arriveing in Florence from Rome by train and will see the sites there before leaving for Greve. we plan on renting scotters in Greve for our 3 days. then we'll take the bus back to Florence to catch the train to Venice.
