Florence to FCO for 11:10 am flight

Hi,

I am traveling to Italy for my honeymoon at the end of June 2016. Our itinerary includes Rome for several days then Cinque Terre. We fly out of FCO on Friday, July 1st at 11:10 in the morning. We are planning to spend our last day and night in Florence since it is too difficult to get from CT to Rome in the morning. We have already booked accommodations Thursday night in Florence. Our flight out of Rome is not a direct to the US flight. We fly to Stockholm first and have a layover before boarding a flight back to the US. Since we are not on a direct US flight, how early should we arrive at FCO? I've heard you need about three hours if flying out of Terminal 5 direct to US, but we will be on Norwegian Air going to Stockholm first.

Is it possible to take the train from Florence to FCO on Friday morning? I checked and there is a fast train that gets into Rome Termini at 8:35 am. There is a regional train that gets into Termini at 8:26 am, but I figure that is more likely to be delayed? We would then take the Leonardo Express to the airport. Is that cutting it too close? I have also looked into a private transfer from Florence to FCO but have been quoted between 400 and 600 euros. That seems expensive but we may have to do that, unless you think the train is possible?

FYI - We are young people (early 30s), traveling light, and can move quickly. We live in NYC so are used to hustling to catch trains and subways.

Please let me know what you think about taking the train to FCO that morning (we'd probably arrive at 9:30) for an 11:10 flight to Stockholm. If you don't think we can make it, do you have suggestions for car services that cost less than 400 euros, or is that about right? We don't mind splurging if we have to since this is our honeymoon, but would rather take the train if it's possible.

Thanks all!

I would stay in Rome the last night. I know if might be difficult getting there from the CT but at least you're close enough to the airport that you have options. If there is a train strike or delay you'll miss your flight. If you take a car and there is an accident that ties up traffic you could miss your flight. It's really not worth the risk and the hundreds of extra euros you'll spend on another flight just for a few hours of comfort.

Just leave the CT the last afternoon and make your way to Rome that night. The next morning you can easily take a train or taxi to the airport.

I think the train would be a very risky thing to try. You're gambling thousands of dollars in new tickets home if you miss that flight. Why not spend your last night in Rome, rather than Florence? I personally don't think a night in Florence is worth a 400 to 600 euro taxi ride. If this is your only opportunity to visit Florence, spend the day there and take a late train to Rome on Thursday night.

And even though it's just a flight to Stockholm, arrive three hours ahead. You never know what you'll find on a Friday morning in July. Find yourself a coffee shop in the airport and enjoy one last cappucino rather than making a stressful mad dash that could well end badly.

Thanks Donna. We were really hoping to see Florence before we leave, so maybe I will just take a late train from Florence to Rome on the evening of June 30th?

Thanks Charlene. I think I might have to just do that (do Florence for just the day and leave late Thursday). It sucks to eat the cost of the night we booked in Florence, but probably still cheaper than paying for a car back to Rome in the early morning on Friday, and certainly cheaper than missing our flight.

Anyone feel differently?

I think that's a wise decision. Maybe the hotel in Florence will refund some or all of your prepayment (I assume you prepaid)? Explain about the trains & your honeymoon & maybe they'll give you a break.

A suggestion for your next trip: book your hotels through Booking.com. Most (not all, so look carefully) of the hotels offer free cancellation, anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks before your trip. So you have some flexibility. You'll pay about the same (sometimes less) as booking directly through the hotel. We especially like the fact that reviews can only be made by people who have actually stayed at the hotel, so they're pretty trustworthy.

I hope you have a wonderful, memorable honeymoon!

It's risky in case of a significant delay to your Florence-Rome train (rare but possible).

Also be aware that Norwegian Air is a low cost long distance carrier and unless you buy their FLEX level ticket (substantially more expensive), their tickets are non refundable.

I'd spend the last night in Rome. I'm sure you can still cancel your Florence accommodations at no cost. Nearly all places in Italy have cancellation policies that allow to cancel booking within 24 or 48 hours (or maybe a week at the most). I've never heard of a hotel that won't allow cancellations 3 months in advance, and I would never book a place like that.

Thanks for weighing in. I will see what I can do about cancelling the stay in Florence. It was an air bnb deal which is why I am not sure. It wasn't too expensive though so not a huge deal to cancel if I can't get a refund.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here who commented. I was able to cancel my Florence accommodation and get a full refund from the AirBnB host because I explained the situation with the trains and my early flight. Mentioning it was my honeymoon probably also helped. Thanks again!

There are direct high speed trains from Monterosso to Rome you can take the day before. Stay in Rome for the last night (not by the airport but in the city). You can also check with your hotel, we had a private car from the hotel to the airport for departure for 45 euro. I believe the Leonardo Express is 12-14 euro. So for only 20 euro more we deicded to use the car then walk to the train station and use the train to the airport. It wasn't that much more in price.
