Florence to Civitavecchia port/ then Port to Rome

Ciao! fellow travelers-
We are staying in Florence for 3 nights prior to our 7 day Med cruise which leaves from Civitavecchia port on a Wednesday evening.
We need to get to Rome, meet up with 2 family members who are joing us for the cruise.

We will take train from Florence to Rome to meet them.
Next, would it be easiest to get private driver/van to take us to the Port? Considering luggage, can they get us closer to embarkation point at the port?

or

Should the 4 of us take the train to Civitavecchia? Then we have to walk to the Port with our luggage or catch a bus from what i've read.

None of us have ever been to Italy, although we're all pretty seasoned travelers.
Once we return from the cruise, we are all going back to Rome for 3 nights. By then I expect us to be pretty tired and may splurge for the private driver into Rome, in the essence of time as well.

Please give me your thoughts and experiences. Thanks so much

A private driver or a taxi will be in the range of 150 euro. Civit... is about an hour from Rome. Contact Roma Cab for a quote. The train for four of you will run between 40 and 50 euro and take about an hour depending on the train. Basically a commuter run with three or four trains each hour. From the train station you can get a cab, it is a short distance. A bus is available for a euro or two but the crowd can make waiting for the bus a pain. And you can walk, it is flat and along the shore but a pain if hauling a lot of luggage that is typical of most cruise passengers. Inside the port entrance, a free bus will take you to your ship. We walk but we only have three carry size luggage for the two of us. Two rolling and one backpack style so it is easy for us to walk. However, you do it, you will have lots of company. Returning is the same issue. If you decide on the train, buy your return ticket when you are in Termini because ticket counter in Civit.. absolutely will be overwhelmed by the other cruise ship passengers especially if more than one ship is in port. The line to buy the ticket would be longer than train ride into Rome.

If you take an early train out of Florence to Termini, which would put you arriving a little after 9:00 AM. I would plan on taking a train to Civitavecchia no later than 10:00 AM, as it takes a little over an hour, so that you can get to your ship's check-in by noon. The bus from the Civitavecchia train station to the cruise ship shuttle area is pretty easy. The times we have used it, it has not been to very busy.
As Frank said, buy all of your train tickets in advance, less room for stress.
