What is the easiest and shortest way to get to Cinque Terre from Florence? Besides trains and busses, I've heard there are ferries that can take you the last part of the way. Where does one board a ferry?

There's really only one way to the CT from Florence. Train. The journey will take almost 3hrs to get to Riomaggiore, the first of the 5 CT towns. You will change trains 1-2 times depending on the run. There is a ferry that goes along the coast that stops at 4 of the 5 towns but you need to get to La Spezia to get close to it. From the La Spezia Centrale train station, you take a bus to Portovenere and catch it there. This will lengthen your journey. If you are in the CT for a few days, simply go to Monterosso and catch the ferry there to Portovenere. Have a nice lunch and take a later ferry back. You might be able to get a bus to La Spezia but there are no buses in the CT.
