Florence to airport

Good Morning travellers! We have a very early flight (650a.m) and are arriving back to Florence around noon the day before. We would like to enjoy the afternoon/evening in Florence and are not particularly interested in staying out by the airport (i haven't read anything good about the hotels there) (we are early risers - maybe an age thing!) My question is - could anyone recommend a hotel that is relatively easy to get to in the early morning hours? Is the train station enroute to the airport? - i am looking at a hotel on that side of Florence as well but thought i'd ask for some seasoned advice.
Cheers Brenda

I didn't proof read my work and meant to say..."could someone recommend a hotel that is within an easy commute to the airport"
Thank you for your response and information.

First, there is no train station at the airport. In fact, only four cities in Italy have a train station at the airport. A taxi will be best. Your situation is not uncommon. Most hotels can easily have a taxi waiting for you as early as you want. Note that the airport does not open until 5:00am and the check-in counters don't open until 5:30 (says so on their website). It's a 10-minute taxi ride to the airport. It's a small airport. When selecting a hotel, you might email them and ask if they can have a taxi there at 5:00am.

You could stay anywhere in the historical centre and have pretty much the same transit time to the airport in the morning. (Although I suspect it would take longer to get to the airport from the Otrarno area). There are a lot of hotels in the Santa Maria Novella area (close to the central train station), but nothing in the centre is really far. I was in the Santa Croce area on the eastern side of the central area, in June of this year and left from there for the airport. It took 20 minutes to get there in mid morning traffic. The traffic will be quite light early in the morning. Many flights leave early in the morning as most people have to get to a larger airport like Rome and change flights for their final destination. The taxi companies are well aware of this and have taxis available for these early morning trips. You should ask your hotel to call to reserve one for you the night before, but even if they call in the morning, it should not take long to get a cab.

I would recommend reserving a taxi the night before, and also getting the phone number for the taxi in case you need to call (some small hotels/b&bs aren't staffed before 6 or 7am).

We stayed at the Hotel Diva, which is less than 2 miles from the airport. It is a nice hotel with a VERY good breakfast. Both times we were there, most recently in March,we wern't disappointed. There is also Coop store right around the back of the hotel, too.
