Florence to a day in the Tuscany hills

My husband and I are spending two nights in Florence and would like to spend one day seeing the typical landscapes of the Tuscany area, some hill towns and of course some vineyards. Open to renting a car or taking the train. We are seasoned travelers but this is our first time in Italy. Thought about renting a car and head to Montepulciano and surrounding area but not sure if that is too much for one day.

First, if you are in Florence for two nights the day you want is the only day you have in Florence. Are you sure you want to get to Florence and then leave for a day trip, come back, and leave again?

OK, it is 70 miles to Montepulciano from Florence, so, yes it is doable. There are many places to visit in addition. A train to Siena for example. Or other Tuscan towns. San Gimignano, Volterra, Monterigioni, etc, and all can done by car as well as Siena in a long day.

Others, Panzano, Greve, Certaldo, Vinci

My best advice is to contact Hills and Roads Touring and do a private tour. Tell them what you want and let them do the rest. Did that 2 weeks ago. Best decision. You both get to enjoy a stress free ride and an explanation of what you are seeing and where you stop. Minimum is 6 hours and you decide time as you go. We ended up with 11 hours. That was our choice not theirs. Angela was our guide and she answered as fantastic.
