Florence-tips for public transit

Hello. My wife and I will be spending three days in Florence late fall. I was looking for a good website or mobile app for their transit system, but the G wasn’t that helpful. Any suggestions for a good website for maps and trip planning? Do they have multi day passes? Thoughts on buying ahead vs once in town? And how’s the taxi service? (I’m planning to pick up the RS guidebook, but waiting for the new edition.)

(We’re also going to Venice, but their city site looks very accessible and straightforward.)

Thanks!

Florence is so compact
Never had a need for public transportation
Really you can walk everywhere unless you are staying far outside the center

Same as Christine. The historic center of Florence is so compact that we didn't use public transit at all. In addition to being compact, it's a city best seen on foot. Some people mention taking transit up to Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato (visits to both highly recommended) but you should be able to easily handle the rest unless you have mobility challenges.

Hello robert.c.nutter, and welcome to the forum,

There are many Taxi apps - AppTaxi has worked well for me in northern cities. You need to call a taxi to you or get one at the taxi stand - no grabbing cabs on the street.

Google maps transit tab does a good job of mapping buses if you want to take one. One challenge is that much of the old center is not easily accesible by bus. Smaller transit buses do their best to make up the difference but as people have noted here walking is the most common form of transport. Buses tend to run around the city center but can be helpful to get to and from the train station or back from the far side of the Arno after a long day depending on where you're staying.

All Tuscan buses are now supposed to support credit card tap-in/out for all transit modes so you might read up on that. I'm assuming the old school paper bus tickets are still sold at newstands and the "T" marked tabac shops - at least for now.

Florence is great, enjoy,

CityMapper is also a good app to use.
I like to buy a handful of paper tickets at a Tabaccheria shop.
Then if I want to hop on a bus I can do so right then and there.
They are valid for 90minutes.
Last year each was E1.50.
May have increased since then.
Also valid for the trams.
Florence has little electric buses: C1, C2, C3 and D lines.
They just all do a circular route round the centre.
I love them for when I’m tired of walking and….. they have AC!
A cheap way of having a mini tour round the streets.
You can’t get lost.

The official app is AT (autolinee toscane) and the web site is https://www.at-bus.it/en
As far as I know there are monthly passes and they are registered on Italian health/fiscal cards, so I can't tell how it would work for a foreign citizen.
The Tap and Go terminals on buses and trams work with credit cards. A standard ticket amount (eur 1,70) is charged when you tap and is good for 90 minutes (if you board a second bus you should tap again but if within time limit you are not charged again).
Taxis are available at selected parking areas or better summoned by phone: 055-4242, 055-4390. 055-4798. They are quite expensive (an average urban run is eur 10/15) and at times (for example when it is raining) may be difficult to find.
