I watched the Monday Night Travel Florence episode last night. There was a steak restaurant shown and I didn't catch the name. I believe (but am not 100% sure) that it was in the Oltrarno area. Thanks!
I don't know where he went, but many Florentines will tell you that the best steak is probably at the Perseus, near Piazza della Libertà.
These are the top for us "Fiorentini veraci" (I'm not mentioning the ones far from the city center, since they'd be too inconvenient for visitors from out of town):
Perseus
Latini
Buca Lapi
Buca dell'Orafo
Trattoria Mario
Sergio Gozzi
Brindellone**
l’Antico Ristoro di Cambi **
Trattoria Marione
** located in the Oltrarno area
In one of Rick's Florence Video's, he had the steak at Antico Ristoro di Cambi. This is the one Video my husband watched with me, afterwards he looked at me and said, "please make that Steak happen". So I did and we went, and had the most amazing meal, now it is a must stop when we go to Florence and one of the main reasons my Husband wants to stop in Florence and requests that we go to Florence on all future trips to Europe. We recommend it to all our friends. I Highly recommend a reservation, which can be made on their website, as they get very crowded (From Ricks video maybe?) and we often see people turned away.
a word of warning, you have to REALLY like steak since it's huge and you have to like it quite rare since that's the only way they serve it. Our friends who go to Florence quite often refuse to eat it anymore.
Yes. It's huge therefore although it's served individually as one, but you can share it.
It must be over 800g (almost 2lb) and 5 cm (2 inches) thick to qualify as such, but most commonly it's between 1kg and 1.2kg, therefore between 2.2 lb and 2.6 lb.
It's very rare in the middle, and they won't ask you if you want it medium or well done, because they will refuse to serve it other than rare.
Unless you are a huge football player, one 'Fiorentina' will be enough for 3 people at least.
My son and his wife swear by this restaurant. But it is out of the main city center I believe.
Ristorante La Reggia Degli Etruschi
Via S. Francesco 18 50014 Fiesole
I am not much a heavy eater and this might be first time trying steak so which steak would you recommend me to try. I will be eating alone, as my partner is a vegetarian.
I like the beef filets. They are perfect for a smaller person like me.
For a more manageable portions, try:
Tagliata di Manzo Alla Fiorentina
(pronounce: Talliata di Manzo). Literally cuts of beef.
Often served on a bed of arugula with shaved parmesan cheese and small tomatoes
I had a great one at the Perseus restaurant.

Omg you guys are making me hungry for a good steak !
Thank you Roberto - saving your recommendations for sure.
Letizia is right - Rick’s go-to place for bistecca ala Fiorentina is Antico Ristoro di Cambi. We went there on our first trip. They’re definitely in the Oltrarno, and that’s the neighborhood where I’ve stayed on every trip. They’re just one block in, once you get across the Arno River on the Amerigo Vespucci bridge, so not super far from downtown Florence.
They exclusively use Chianina beef, and bring the steak to your table for your approval, before cooking it.
Thank you Roberto da Firenze, Talliata di Manzo looks ideal for me to eat as I will be only one eating it.
Do you have any restaurant recommendation for this to try?
Tito is one of the few restaurants in the centre of Florence catering mainly to locals. I was introduced to it by a friendly accountant that used to have lunch there, near his office. As my father, a retired gentleman, lives alone a couple minutes walking from Tito, I introduced him to Tito as well and now he uses the restaurant to supplement his own kitchen; when he does not feel in the mood of cooking himself, he phones the restaurant and orders a take-away tagliata.
We had the steak Florentine in Siena. It was a fun experience. We are not huge beef eaters, and you need to enjoy your rare beef to enjoy the steak. Fortunately my wife agreed to share it with me, since 1.1 KG is WAYYYY over my single-eater limit.
Grazie to all! Not only do I have the name of the restaurant, but many other places to try! We'll be in Florence in May and hope we can try many of the recommendations for bistecca ala Fiorentina. Such big portions - I hope leftovers "to go" is an ok thing to ask for!
