Florence: small hotel vs B&B

I'm going to be in Florence with my wife for 4 nights in November. The question I have is would a B&B be nicer than a small hotel? I'm trying to do this for no more than $150/night and would like to stay close to the city center if possible. We are not renting a car and will be arriving and leaving Florence by train.

I've been scouring the list of hotels on TripAdvisor.com, but you can only get so much information on there by looking at the reviews and pictures. I thought that the B&B's might be a good alternative.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

thanks

I did the RS Florence tour this past December. Arrived a day early and spent Christmas Eve at the Casa Rovai B & B. LOVED it. Then again I also enjoyed the Hotel Accademia where we stayed for the tour. Both meet your criteria. If I were to return tomorrow and had to make a choice I'd stay at Casa Rovai. It's the charm of it being a hidden oasis, the well appointed rooms and it's gracious proprietor, Adrianna that helps me make the choice.

Stuart, you might also have a look at Hotel Aldobrandini. It's a small Hotel that also provides breakfast, and is in a great location within easy walking distance to Firenze SMN station.

Residenza Il Villino is what you're looking for! Center, clean, affordable, small B&B, excellent hosts and excellent tripadvisor ratings. I believe they are now also in Rick's Italy book although we stayed there before Rick included them.

Stuart, on our last trip we stayed at the Soggiormo Battistero on Piazza San Giovanni. Very nice; our window looked out on the Duomo and the Baptistry. It's on the third floor and no elevator, however.

OK....based upon the comments here and on TripAdvisor we have booked our stay at Casa Rovai. We are looking forward to it.

You have some good advice above. In answering your question, I will say that most B&Bs are nicer than small hotels. If you want to know the people of Florence and see how they live, the B&B is the only answer.

I find small hotels usually too commercial and impersonal for me. There is very little difference in cost. A lot depends on which you choose because there is much variation in amenities.

Before my first trip to Europe I read that owners expect you to inspect a room before you rent. I always do that and find the landlady accepts my moving on if the room doesn't meet my needs. Be prepared to take time to look at the room.
