We'll be in Florence for four days and want to use one day for a side trip. Is it possible to do both Siena and San Gimignano in one day? If not, which one is best?
Yes, it is possible. Grayline even has a one-day trip to both that is quite nice. The bus leaves from a stop one block from the Florence train station. One hour in San G. and 4-5 hours in Siena. The portion in Siena includes a very nice guided tour. www.caftours.com If you wish to train and bus between the two, you can do that too.
If you wish to do this yourself, take the train to Poggibonsi and then take the frequent bus from the train station to San G. Later, you can take a bus from San G. to Siena. Finally, you can either take the train or bus back to Florence.
This is great news! I didn't want to have to choose. I think I'll check out the tour first and then consider navigating it ourselves. We tend to avoid the tours because we like to be able to do our own thing in our own time. But, in this case, I do think we'll need the structure in order to do two towns in one day.
Thanks!
I did this type of day tour a few years ago and all it did was make me want to go back to both Siena and SG. I felt I had only scratched the surface of both and didn't have nearly enough time in either. I have just returned from a trip where we spent 1/2 day in SG and 3 days in Siena and loved it. If you just want to get a bit of feel then a day trip is a good introduction and a guide take you to all the major sights. Google 'day trips+Siena' and see what comes up. There are several companies that do them.

I have been to both, albeit on separate trips. I much preferred Siena. (Although I'm not sure it was a fair comparison since I went to Siena in the off season - very little crowds; and San Gimignano in the height of tourist season.)
Yes, you could probably do both on a single day. But I found I really enjoyed having a day and a half to stroll around Siena and enjoy it in the evening (attended a classical music concert!). I spent half a day in San Gimignano and thought that was enough for me.
