Florence: shoes and taxis

  1. Do you have any advice on shoe buying? We'd love to get a great pair for my husband for around 200€. We've probably been in 15 shops and are having the hardest time pulling the trigger. Any advice? Shops that you love? We're leaning towards a pair in one of the little shops near the Ponte Vecchio. We'd like them to be special and not made in China with a "Made in Italy" stamp.

  2. We leave tomorrow and are wondering how we should go about getting to the airport. Taxi? Or public transport? Any suggestions? If you suggest a taxi, how should we go about finding one?

Thank you so so much.

We were in Florence in September. Bought 2 pair of shoes for our sons in a shoe shop on the other side of the ponte vecchio. The salesman told us when we get home to have a sole put on the bottom of the shoes to protect them. The shoes were 99 euros each. When we got home we went to the local cobbler ( an old Italian) he knew exactly what we needed. cost another $60.00 per pair My boys love the shoes. The shoes were made in Italy not china confirmed by the cobbler. The name of the store was Otisopse. good luck

Can't help you on shoes. I generally don't buy in the city center. I used to shop at the Calzoleria Bologna on via Sant'Antonino in youth, but haven't done so recently.
To get to the airport it's a short taxi ride from the city center (15 min on average). The cost is a flat €20+luggage fee (€1 per bag going in the trunk). Before 7 am there is a night surcharge of about €3 to 4. Ask your hotel to call for you, or if you have a phone you can call yourself. They have English speaking operators. Also you can do so with their website or app. The two main companies are below.

Yes, Florence airport. We don't have a hotel, we're staying in an apartment and we don't have a phone. Is there a taxi stand near the city center?

My favorite shop is Benigni, Borgo Ognissanti (on the corner with via Melegnano). They have two men lines - the cheaper one, Stonefly, is extremely comfortable but not very sturdy. Calpierre shoes are more expensive, but are classic men shoes made in a small factory near Naples, and are really classic and very durable.

Taxis? Phone at 055-4242 or 055-4390 or 055-4798 and have a taxi summoned to your address by radio.
