Florence San Lorenzo area safe for 2 females to walk back to hotel after dark?

Returning to Italy in June with my 23 yo daughter (instead of my husband) and now safety is a somewhat of a concern. We will be smart and alert, but are there any areas that you would recommend avoiding after dark? I do remember that the San Lorenzo area, where we stayed 3 years ago, got kind of deserted at night. We did enjoy the closeness to Centrale/San Lorenzo markets, but perhaps should choose a different area. I was also considering the area close to SMN and SMN piazza, but someone told my husband NOT to have us stay there for safety reasons. I wasn't really concerned until now. For those of you frequent visitors, should we consider staying in a more populated/touristy area? We will be walking back after dark. This question is for Florence, but we are traveling to Rome and Venice as well. Any input regarding areas to avoid at night input is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

There was a newspaper article just yesterday in Florence claiming the that the S. Lorenzo area is not safe in the night. We are talking more of unpleasantness that real danger, but yes, the S. Lorenzo area is not the best - not because it is desert by night, but because too many of the wrong people are there. Some alleys to avoid in Florence: via Panicale - via S. Antonino (S.Lorenzo area); via Palazzuolo - via del Porcellana (SMN area); gardens on the back of Fortezza da Basso; Cascine park.

I can't think of any such comparable areas, campos or calles in Venice.

San Lorenzo is a broad definition. Some areas, like Piazza San Lorenzo itself is very safe. Many other areas of San Lorenzo are also safe. The areas mentioned by lachera are specific corners which are now frequented by the wrong people. Well. Forget euphemisms and political correctness. We are talking about North African pushers who have taken over certain spots to carry out their drug business. Being mostly young males, they often also bother females with thei cat calls.
There are many corners of the city that are now subjected to this plague. Below is a detail description:
